FOCAL CMS ACTIVE NEAR-FIELD MONITORS
July 2008—Focal Professional's (www.focalprofessional.com) new CMS 65 ($995) and CMS 50 ($695) monitors feature die-cast aluminum cabinets housing inverted-dome aluminium/magnesium tweeters boasting lightweight mass and superb damping. The Polyglass bass driver combines hollow microscopic balls of glass to a pulp cellulose cone with an impressive rigidity vs. mass ratio. The CMS 65 is powered by 165 watts while the CMS 50 is powered by 130W, and each model benefits from the smoother sound of two high-end, Class-A/B amps. Other features include separate HF and LF shelving adjustments, a Desktop Notch correction filter for controlling first reflections in applications where the speakers are located over the mixing board, a rubber decoupling stand, and spikes for tilting the speakers and adjusting soundstage height.
FOCAL SM6 SERIES
October 2005—The Solo 6 has a new 6-inch “W” sandwich cone driver (low mass/high rigidity), in which the woofer acts as a perfect piston, providing maximum acceleration and no low-end distortion. The Twin 6 uses two woofers with a left/right positional switch to keep the imaging tight. Both models are complemented by Focal’s unique inverse-dome 40kHz response beryllium tweeter and feature a bass-reflex design delivering Focal’s legendary sound quality at a modest budget.
FOCAL TWIN 6 BE
June 2005—Focal debuts the Twin 6 Be, which comprises two 6.5-inch LF/MF drivers (with 150W amps on each) and a 100W amp pushing a TBEPRO inverted beryllium dome tweeter. Response is 40 to 40k Hz, with its tri-amplification yielding 115dB SPLs from its 19.7×9.8×13.4-inch, 31-pound cabinet. A more compact design, Focal's two-way Solo 6 Be pairs a 6.5-inch woofer and inverted beryllium tweeter with 250W (total) of bi-amplification, providing a 40 to 40k Hz response with 113dB peak SPLs. Mag shielding is standard on both models.
FOCAL TWIN 6 BE, SOLO 6 BE
June 2005—The tri-amped Twin 6 Be and bi-amped Solo 6 Be models from Focal feature a beryllium tweeter and single or dual 6.5-inch woofers.
FOCAL SM11
December 2003—Focal's SM11 monitor is an active three-way system with an 11-inch LF driver (and 11-inch passive radiator), a 6-inch mid driver and a beryllium-dome HF driver. The LF driver receives 250 watts, the midrange gets 150 and a 100W amp powers the HF driver. The speaker features direct digital inputs and has an internal 24-bit/96kHz converter. The most significant distinction, in terms of the DSP, is that Finite Impulse Response (FIR) algorithms are used, nearly eliminating the phase difficulties associated with IIR algorithms. Focal's PDA-based remote control enables storage of many user-generated presets. The DSP also features an algorithm to fine-tune the “sweet spot.”
