CHARTER OAK M900
November 2006—Charter Oak's first small-diaphragm microphone, the M900 (www.charteroakacoustics.com; $569, single, $1,099, matched pair) features a two-step sensitivity switch (-10 dB and -20 dB) and a two-position bass roll-off (15 Hz/75 Hz). The mic ships with cardioid, hypercardioid and omni capsules that can be quickly swapped for the desired polar pattern. As an interesting extra service, the company's Adapt service lets users create their own desired mic characteristics: Within 30 days of purchase, customers can ship the microphone back to the company for desired modifications based on studio environment and professional taste.

CHARTER OAK ACOUSTICS M900
October 2006—The new M900 transformerless small-diaphragm condenser mic uses the company’s S-5 (cardioid), S-6 (hypercardioid) and S-7 (omni) capsule types. All three capsules are shipped with each M900 head amplifier and are easily interchangeable. The M900 has a two-step sensitivity switch (-10/-20 dB) and a two-position bass roll-off (-3dB/octave starting at 150 Hz; -6dB/octave starting at 75 Hz). The M900 ships in a flight case with windsock and mic clip, and include CharterOak’s lifetime warranty.


CHARTER OAK ACOUSTICS SA538B
October 2005—The SA538B microphone is a variation on the company’s flagship product, the SA538. The SA538B employs the side-terminated S-2 capsule–type and, as a result, provides extended bass response and extremely smooth treble response. This mic is excellent for vocal recording. Each microphone is hand-assembled and tested in our studio with a seven-day burn-in. The mic ships in a lockable flight case with power supply, appropriate cables and shock-mount.


CHARTER OAK ACOUSTICS S600
October 2005—This cardioid tube condenser is sold in sequentially numbered pairs with a dual power supply, two shock-mounts and cables. The S600 employs a 1-inch, side-terminated S-3 capsule and is excellent when used as a stereo overhead pair on drums in small rooms. The result is non-sibilant cymbals while picking up all of the transient peaks of the snare and toms. The S600’s extended bass response makes it excellent for recording bass guitar, while its particularly smooth treble response is perfect for recording bright electric guitars. Each mic is hand-assembled and tested in our studio with a seven-day burn-in period. The mics ship in a lockable flight case.


CHARTER OAK SA538B
July 2005—The SA538B ($1,599) microphone is a variation of the company’s flagship product, the SA538. July 2005—The S600 microphone is a front-address cardioid vacuum tube condenser and is sold in sequentially numbered pairs with a dual power supply, two shock-mounts and appropriate cables. The S600 employs the CharterOak S-3 capsule, which is a 1-inch side-terminated design. The capsule employs a 6-micron-thick gold-sputtered Mylar diaphragm. The head amp section employs a hand-selected J/J Tesla ECC 83 dual triode and various high-quality Xicon and Mial polypropylene and polystyrene capacitors; no electrolytic capacitors are present in the audio signal path. The S600 also employs a hand-selected custom output transformer. The mic is geared to be used a stereo pair on a drum kit in small rooms, recording bass guitar and bright electric guitars.


CHARTER OAK SA538
February 2005—The Charter Oak SA538 ($1,499) large-capsule tube mic is hand-made from solid brass and features a dual 1.07-inch, 6-micron-thick gold-sputtered Mylar diaphragm, has 22 dB of equivalent input noise and will take 128dB SPL with 0.5% total harmonic distortion @ 1 kHz. The mic comes with a dedicated power supply that provides for switching between cardioid, omni and figure-8 patterns. Each tube is given a seven-hour burn-in period, and each mic is tested for half-an-hour in a studio environment prior to sale.
