Engineer/producer/artist Alan Parsons stopped by Webster University as part of the school's AES guest speaker/clinician list. Parsons began his visit by speaking to a packed Winnie Moore Auditorium on the school's main campus, entertaining the audience with tales about his start in the recording industry. The visit then opened up to a Q&A session, where Parsons fielded a wide range of questions on such topics as the lack of noise on Dark Side of the Moon (attributed to the Kepex expanders), the use of synthesizers (no, that's not a hi-hat in On the Run) and his role in The Alan Parsons Project. ...

Taking a Critical Listen

One of the few audio schools that offers a master's degree in Sound Recording Technology, the Music Department at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (www.uml.edu) recently celebrated the news that its $500,000 critical listening room was rated as one of the top five rooms in the industry by a panel of sound engineers. The room features a 5.1 sound system and serves as both a recording studio and lab. “We ask students to identify and quantify by ear specific aspects of sound, a necessary component of recording any music,” said program associate director Bill Carman. ...

OIART Adds Games Development

The Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology (www.oiart.ca) is the first audio education program in North America to be registered as a game developer with Creative Labs. Three full-time OIART faculty members have full access to Creative Labs' 3-D audio tools and have already incorporated them into the school's program. A group of 20 U.S. engineers, producers and musicians were recently invited to teach a group of 130 students at the Danish Rhythmic Music Conservatory (RMC) in Copenhagen, Denmark. The weeklong event gave college-age Danish musicians and engineers a unique look into the performance, production and recording of American music. It culminated in a standing room — only concert that was part of Copenhagen's Culture Night, a yearly event where museums, concert halls, schools and other venues throughout the city are open until midnight. All evening, the public is free to drop in on any venue to sample the best art and culture the city has to offer. ...

Full Sail Real World Education (Orlando, Fla.) recently purchased a new live sound system comprising eight JBL VerTec VT4888DP Series integrated audio systems with DrivePack technology. The purchase is the first part of a complete Harman Pro Group HiQnet? audio system, which links system components from different Harman companies with a network control software package.
